ESL Teacher

My name is Susan Myers. I was born and raised in Connecticut. I am the ESL teacher for Brentwood School District. I have been teaching at BSD since 2003. I have been teaching ESL for 19 years and I LOVE IT! I am certified to teach grades K-12. I have a BA in Business Administration and Communications. In 1987, I volunteered to teach ESL in Washington, DC. I enjoyed it so much, I decided to go back to school and earn a teaching degree. Then, in 1996, I earned a Masters Degree in ESL from The State University at Stony Brook, Long Island. I am certified to teach ESL in Virginia, New York, Nebraska, and Missouri. (My husband's job took us to some great places to live!) I am also certified to teach Basic Business. I have 2 awesome children, Peter and Madeline. Missouri is where we have made our home! I feel very fortunate to be a part of such a great staff at BSD.

  ESL Program:

Students are tested for English proficiency when they enter and exit the program. The LAS, "Language Assessment Scale" and the Maculaitis are assessment tools used to determine individual English proficiency. English proficiency is taught utilizing four skills:

Listening speaking book pencil
Listening
Speaking
Reading
Writing

Lessons are created based on the English proficiency level of the particular students. Students are instructed in the ESL classroom, with visits to the libary and computer room. When needed, Mrs. Myers lends support in the mainstream classroom, with the mainstream teacher. Mrs. Myers works very closely with the mainstream teachers to discuss each student's language acquisition and level of proficiency.
