District Complies with Asbestos Regulations
On October 22, 1986, President
Ronald Reagan sign into law the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Act (AHERA,
Public Law 99-519). The law requires the EPA to develop regulations
that provide a comprehensive framework for addressing asbestos problems
in public and private elementary and secondary schools to inspect for
friable and non-friable asbestos, develop asbestos management plans
that address asbestos hazards in school buildings, and implement response
actions in a time fashion. This rule became effective December 14, 1987.
The Brentwood School District
had conducted a complete inspection of its facilities in June of 1988,
and a three-year re-inspection in June 1991. It also conducted inspections
in June 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, and in 2006. In addition, six-month
surveillance inspections occur in June and December. The results of
these inspections have been included in a management plan. This management
plan is available in the district office and in the offices of each
school during normal business hours, without cost or restriction, for
inspection by representatives of the EPA and the State, and the Public,
including teachers, other school personnel and their representatives
and parents.
Licensed contractors using
state of the art technology and methodology perform all related work.
An on-site manager, project designer and a third party air monitor are
also used.
The purpose of the state
and federal regulations is to protect the health and well being of all
persons entering the buildings of this district for any reason. The
Brentwood School District takes very seriously the recommendations made
in the management plan that has been sent to the Missouri Department
of Health.
This person in this district
trained to oversee asbestos activities and ensure compliance is the
Brentwood School District Maintenance Supervisor. As required in the
rule, the maintenance supervisor is the single contact for the public
to obtain information about asbestos-related activities in the district
and can be reached at 314-962-3837 Ext. 30.
